Oxford Air Training PPL and NPPL Books

The OAT Media study guides for the PPL are an excellent addition to any (Student) Pilot's bookshelf.

They are large (A4) hardback books with clear text and full colour graphics that make even the trickiest parts of the syllabus a pleasure to read. I much prefer these to black and white A5 sized books.

This is the first book in the OAT Media series and it covers Air Law and Operational Procedures. It's ideal for any student pilots training for their UK NPPL or JAR-FCL/EASA Pilot’s Licence, but it's also very useful for those who are thinking of renewing their licences or thinking of continuing their training to obtain other post PPL licences and ratings e.g. IMC, IR, CPL and so on. If you can learn and absorb the contents of this book not only will it help you to pass the Air Law exam but it will boost your airmanship skills if you can at least keep most of the subject matter fresh in your mind after you qualify for a licence. This book covers those aspects of flying and airmanship that include the interaction between the pilot, the aircraft, and the environment in which they fly. It describes the demands placed upon the pilot's physiology during flight and explains why it's therefore important to maintain a high level of fitness and a healthy lifestyle. It's also important to know when to decide when to postpone any flying in the event of ill health or stress. Human Performance and Limitations is an essential subject for all student and qualified pilots who want to improve their airmanship and promote safe and efficient flight operatons.

Despite the advances in GPS systems and the 'glass' cockpits that are gradually replacing analogue instruments there's every reason for pilots to know how to navigate using a map, compass, and a stopwatch. The techniques and the mathematics haven't changed in decades, and the ability to navigate by traditional methods is a vital skill that needs to be learnt and kept alive with regular practice. Any kind of electronic navigational aid can fail and being able to navigate without them has been the saviour of many pilots. Besides, many older and vintage aircraft contain only very basic intrument panels so traditional navigation skills are mandatory in some aircraft types. Every pilot needs to be able to not only interpret and understand weather reports, TAFs, and METARs for the purposes of flight planning, but also when to divert a flight or return to the starting point in the event of deteriorating weather en route. In the crowded airspace of the British Isles with its unpredictable and often changing weather it's even more important for private pilots to be able to develop confidence in their own abilities. Meteorology is a subject that anyone can learn from the comfort of their own home. Books, TV and the Internet give us access to more information than every before. This book will help you to make sense of all that knowledge and to turn it into a skill.

This is the book that will teach the student the mechanics and the principles of flight. With clear pictures and easy to follow explanations it describes all the component parts of modern light aircraft. Airframes, engines, electrical and hydraulic systems are all covered along with flight instruments. The principles of plight and aeroplane performance are described in a manner that is both helpful to the student pilot and relevant to the practising pilot. Armed with the knowledge contained in this book the novice will be able to approach the theoretical exam with confidence and any aviator will be better equipped for many years of safe flying. This is the book every pilot needs in order to understand how to load a light aircraft with fuel, passengers and baggage in such a way that the flight can be conducted safely and within the limit's of the aircraft, the departure and destination airfields, taking into account runway length, type (grass, tarmac/concrete) and prevailing weather conditions at the time of departure and arrival. It's essential that every pilot knows how to carry out mass and balance calculations accurately for each individual aircraft type, particularly for post PPL pilots intent on using their new licence for carrying passengers over extended distances and to various airfield types that might be unfamiliar.

Confident use of the radio while flying can make learning to fly a much more enjoyable and less stressful experience. Many student pilots postpone learning RT (Radio Telephony) because they feel self-consious when speaking on the radio. This is understandable but these nerves must be overcome. Being able to communicate clearly and to understand instructions and information received from various types of ATSUs (Air Traffic Service Units) will not only increase the pleasure of flying but will increase safety and efficiency. It is an essential skill that contributes to good airmanship and like all abilities can only be generated by knowledge and practice. Although the above is a CD-ROM and not a book it's included here to compliment the RT book described alongside. This interactive multimedia product can be used on a home PC or laptop and will increase the speed at which the student develops Radio Telephony skills and confidence. It helps you to become used to the sound of your own voice repeating RT phraseology and the practice of speaking and listening to the examples will decrease the amount of time taken to become proficient when flying. All you need is a computer with speakers and a microphone. You can at least watch and listen while travelling using a notebook or laptop.

The full set of PPL books would be of huge benefit to anyone learning to fly or those who have already obtained their licence. There is a tendency for knowledge to ebb away after the theoretical exams have been passed, but these volumes will help to keep that information fresh in the mind and thereby contribute to improved airmanship.

By the way, it's Private Pilot's Licence here in the UK, not Private Pilot's License.

The verb is 'to license', as in 'The Council have licensed this pub and I am therefore licensed to sell alcohol.'.

The noun is 'licence', as in 'I have a driver's licence and I have a licence for this pub'.
