Having only just decided to go for an NPPL, my local flying club recommended the AFE series as part of the curriculum. A good thorough explanation of topics as required for PPL and NPPL. Although sometimes lacks the in-depth explanations of subject matter. All in all, a good series for PPL and such but if you want finer detail, you may have to search for it.

Very nice book with good simple instructions for the beginner who has no idea about flying.

Mr Pratt has managed to make a rather dry subject into an enjoyable read. The book is littered with examples including text and pictures from comlete flights to show the theory. I have his other books in the series and they are all of the same quality.

Jeremy Pratt's first book in the PPL Course series covers the exercises 1-19 in clear and interesting detail. Each exercise consists of first a "background briefing", in which most of the detail is covered, then generally an "airmanship" page or two for each exercise, and then a page of progressive graphic (plus explanatory text!) instructions of what is physically done during the exercise. To make the most of your flying lessons, it is possible to go over these exercises beforehand with a flight simulator - it's nice to go in with a clue about what you are going to do!

I much prefer this book to the Trevor Thom books, it seems to get more to the point and describes those terrible abbeiviations and makes them much simpler. Not 5 stars because there are a few typing errors in there but apart from that would recomend to anyone who is needing to learn their air law.

All these books are superb. Got me through all exams first time with great marks and are still a useful resource. Clearly written and engaging. I can't identify any gripes about them.

One of the worst books I have ever seen. For example:The subject "airspace classification" is spread over the whole book. JAA and UK regulations are not compared and the differences worked out, instead the same treatment is repeated in different chapters in identical form. So if you want to know the difference between them the only way to find out is to compare the text line by line. This strange structure also leads to figures appearing up to three times with just minor changes.Unfortunatly they are not in the same chapter. Danger areas and Prohibited areas are covered in yet another chapter.Furthermore, the chapter structure is really bad. Some chapters cover more than one subject while others consist of half a page with no new information at all. But the worst thing is that the book is written as a mixture of law and technical explainations. This would not be that bad if the writing style was uniform. However it is quite irritating that there is just a single line on the what a TMA-airspace is, but about 5 pages on how to avoid wake turbulence. No explainations on when you encounter which airspace during a flight and what procedures are requested by air law. This is somehow mixed into the communications section. One can clearly see that the author hated to write this book and it probably was not reworked for the JAA edition. It almost seems like the JAA updates were inserted at random positions in seperate chapters so that the existing text did not have to be changed.Furthermore, the figures, especially the aironautical charts are too small to recognize the context of the features displayed. All in all: Try to find a better book on "air law" - even it looks like all necessary information is included, it is hard to find it and impossible to learn from it.

Clear, well organised and laid out, intuitive diagrams and text that strikes the right balance between detail and over-burdening density. For readability, this is much better than Thom.

Finally a book on air law that you can understand. This book was a lot easier to get my head round than its competitors

i bought all the Pratt books with out looking at the Trevor Thom books. The Pratt books do explain it all in detail and with nice pics but at the end of the day you are doing the exam to pass. The Thom books cut out all the waffle and cut to the chase .

Substantially better than the Trevor Thom books, which I found to be dull and impenetrable. Plenty of illustrations and clean, spacious layout makes the book easy to follow, with helpful revision questions at the end of each section. Why not 5 stars? Although in its third edition, there are still irritating typographical errors which should have been ironed out long ago, together with the (very) occasional bizarre sentence which seems to have abandoned the English language entirely. Those issues apart, this series is the best I have come across for Private Pilot training.

I like this book very much. Although there is a lot of material in it, structure is consistent and clear. At the end of each chapter there is a number of questions for self-control. Text is detailed and is written in solid, precise manner which makes this book a potentially good long-term source for reference. This book is about technics, and to go through and understand bits of it will require quite some attention and concentration even if you are an engineer or technical person, so be prepared. The only thing I disliked about this book (and the whole series) is very small font size.
